Subcommittee on Sustainability and Resiliency

Committee

The Committee on Facilities and Campus Planning shall have a standing Subcommittee on Sustainability and Resiliency.

The Subcommittee shall be charged with providing oversight and advice regarding the University’s Sustainability Strategic Plan and resiliency initiatives. The Subcommittee shall support the University’s recognition that building a more sustainable and resilient future for the planet is the pivotal challenge of the 21st century and Brown’s commitments to leading by example in both addressing the University’s impact on the environment and also galvanizing education, research and community engagement focused on confronting sustainability issues and building resiliency.

Responsibilities and Duties

The Subcommittee shall be kept informed about and provide advice on the Sustainability Strategic Plan, resiliency initiatives and programs, related challenges and opportunities, and emerging trends and areas for improvement.

The Subcommittee shall become familiar with and review on a regular basis the various metrics and dashboards by which the University monitors and reports on progress towards goals, and make recommendations and suggestions for improvement as necessary and appropriate.

The Subcommittee shall meet approximately three times per year to review and monitor progress on the implementation of the Sustainability Strategic Plan and resiliency initiatives and programs as a whole, with a focus on accountability. It will, as necessary and appropriate, recommend best practices that will ensure that Brown’s commitment to improving in these areas is sustained over time.

The Subcommittee shall provide advice and recommendations to the President regarding sustainability and resiliency policy matters.

The Subcommittee shall report on its activities on a regular basis to the Committee on Facilities and Campus Planning.

Membership

The Subcommittee shall consist of the President, ex officio, and between four to six members appointed by the Chair of Facilities and Campus Planning, at least two of whom shall be current members of the Corporation. Members of the Subcommittee may include Emeriti Corporation members, alumni, and friends of the University, especially those with expertise and experience in matters of sustainability and resiliency. A Chair of the Subcommittee shall be designated annually by the Chair of the Committee on Facilities and Campus Planning.

Staffing

The Subcommittee shall be staffed by the Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration, the Assistant Vice President for Sustainability and Resiliency, and the Associate Provost for Sustainability.
