Committee
The Committee on Medical and Health Affairs shall keep itself fully and currently informed concerning the academic and financial affairs and performance of the Warren Alpert Medical School and the School of Public Health. The Committee has oversight responsibility on behalf of the Corporation for matters pertaining to the faculty and the programs of teaching, research and patient care pursued in the Medical School and the School of Public Health. The Committee shall be especially aware and supportive of collaborations and partnerships between the Medical School and the School of Public Health in light of the increasingly interconnected fields of medicine and public health and strategic opportunities for the University to exercise national and international leadership in these arenas. It shall advise the President and the Corporation as appropriate on academic and fiscal matters, priorities, policy and strategic directions pertaining to medical and public health education and research. The Committee may designate such subcommittees as it deems necessary to address these issues.
Responsibilities and Duties
The Committee shall keep itself informed with regard to interconnections at Brown and elsewhere between medical and public health education and research, and identify and support opportunities to strengthen those connections at Brown with a focus on elevating the local, national and international reputation and impact of the Alpert Medical School and the School of Public Health.
The Committee shall oversee and advise the administration and the Corporation regarding academic, financial and programmatic planning in the areas of medical and health affairs.
The Committee shall review and advise on the University’s strategic relationships, partnerships and agreements with hospitals, physicians groups, and other health care institutions within the context of an integrated and connected approach to medical and health affairs. The Committee shall review and recommend, as necessary, to the Corporation or appropriate body proposed affiliations and/or collaborative programs and initiatives between the Alpert Medical School and/or the School of Public Health and other institutions, including the teaching hospitals.
The Committee shall review and pay particular attention to policies and priorities for Medical School and School of Public Health faculty appointments, promotion, retention, and overall staffing levels, including the quality and diversity of appointments and promotions and the progress made on an ongoing basis with regard to the Diversity and Inclusion Action Plans of both schools.
The Committee shall keep itself informed and advise the administration and the Corporation with regard to matters involving technology transfer, commercial applications of research, and the University’s leadership role in the areas of innovation and entrepreneurial opportunities related to medical and health affairs.
The Committee shall keep itself informed with regard to the annual operating and capital budgets of the Alpert Medical School and School of Public Health and, as necessary and appropriate, make recommendations to the Committee on Budget and Finance.
The Committee shall receive and review regular reports from the administration containing assessment information on agreed-upon measures of academic quality.
On an annual basis the Committee shall receive, review and accept risk management plans prepared by the administration in areas appropriate and relevant to the charge of the Committee
Membership
The Committee shall consist of the President and the Chancellor, ex officio, and approximately ten members, at least six of whom shall be current members of the Corporation. At least one member from the Committees on Academic Affairs and Budget and Finance shall serve on the Committee. The majority of members of the committee will be composed of persons who have no personal or pecuniary interest or other conflict of interest in the operation of the Warren Alpert Medical School, the School of Public Health, Brown University affiliated hospitals, or any related enterprises.
Staffing
The Committee shall be staffed jointly by the Dean of Medicine and Biological Sciences and the Dean of the School of Public Health.
